Love Yourself - Avoid the Mouse

-by Gloria Farley, RN, BSN, COHN-S, Health & Safety and Ergonomic Specialist

February is a great month to do something nice for someone. Why not something for you!
Start a whole new language of "love" by using your mouse less often and instead using your "Keyboard Shortcuts."

The name says it all, shortcuts on your keyboard.  Most computer users know that short cuts exist, but what stops people from really using them?  It’s a matter of memorizing your favorites.

Take a look at the attached "PC Keyboard Shortcuts: Avoid the Mouse!"  It looks overwhelming doesn't it?  No, no, don't put it away...instead pick 5 or 6 of your favorite ones, the ones that could really help you with every day things that you do.  Circle or highlight them, then take only one shortcut at a time and use it like crazy for one full week or maybe two weeks, until it is so deep into your memory bank that it is easy for you to use.

Once you have it in your memory bank, you can start with the next shortcut in the same way, but now you have two more shortcuts to use.  Continue each week adding a new shortcut until you have not only learned, but memorized all that will make your life in the work or home office more comfortable.

You may already have a small repertoire of "shortcuts" you use regularly, like "Control P" to do some printing or perhaps "Control C" for copying.  Without knowing it you are on your way!  So go ahead and love yourself enough to start putting "Keyboard Shortcuts" into your life.  You will be glad you did!
