Prescription Drug Abuse – Out of Control and Epidemic (Part II)

 by Richard Thompson, MD
EK Health Services' Chief Medical Officer

Last month I addressed some aggressive approaches that physicians and the medical community could do to control the use and abuse of opioid pain relievers (OPR). This month, recognizing that educating doctors about the appropriate use Dec2010DrTarticleof OPRs is not lessening this problem, we are starting to see alternative state and federal activity to control this problem.

On November 1, 2011 the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) published an early release of their analysis of the epidemic use and abuse of prescription OPR in the U.S. in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

LEGAL-EASE: A New Year Trilogy

 by Steve Kline, Esq.
EK Health Services' Legal Counsel

A Spin on the Spend

In 2004, the cost of workers' compensation escalated to crisis proportions and reforms were enacted. Over seven years later, the costs are once again mounting. Bag_of_money_photoA recent report by the CEO of Los Angeles County reveals that LA County is paying over a $1 million a day in workers' compensation benefits and administration.

The more alarming statistic revealed in the recent WorkCompCentral article is that when measured in terms of per worker costs (dividing the total workers' compensation costs by the number of workers), LA County spends $3,693.96 per employee. San Francisco spends $2,949.11 per employee. New York City spends $832.26 with almost twice as many workers as LA and SF combined.

Ergonomic Tip of the Month: It's All About Positioning the Keyboard

by Kim Granata-Clark, MS in Human Factors and Ergonomics, Ergonomic Specialist

To get the most comfort from using your keyboard tray, follow these simple tips: Ergo___Jan._2012

First, adjust your keyboard tray height. Lift up the front edge while pressing down on the back of the tray. With the tray tilted away from you, lift or lower the tray to the desired height and then release.

The knob at the back of your keyboard tray changes the tilt; you do not need to use it when raising or lowering your keyboard tray but you will need to tighten the knob by turning it clockwise to help with the stability of the tray. The tray should be placed at your elbow height; when you are sitting against the chair back rest with your shoulders relaxed, elbows next to your body, and palms facing down.
