It's All About Positioning the Keyboard

-by Kim Granata-Clark, MS in Human Factors and Ergonomics, Ergonomic Specialist

To get the most comfort from using your keyboard tray, follow these simple tips:

First, adjust your keyboard tray height. Lift up the front edge while pressing down on the back of the tray. With the tray tilted away from you, lift or lower the tray to the desired height and then release.

The knob at the back of your keyboard tray changes the tilt; you do not need to use it when raising or lowering your keyboard tray but you will need to tighten the knob by turning it clockwise to help with the stability of the tray. The tray should be placed at your elbow height; when you are sitting against the chair back rest with your shoulders relaxed, elbows next to your body, and palms facing down.

To change the angle of the keyboard tray to a negative tilt (downward tilt away from you), lift the front edge of the tray, apply slight pressure to the back of the tray, and tighten the knob clockwise to lock it in place.

A negative tilt may encourage neutral wrist posture (straight wrists) when using your keyboard. You may need to lower the tray slightly so that you are not keying with raised shoulders or placing wrist pressure on the keyboard tray edge.

To change the keyboard tray back to neutral, turn the knob counter clockwise while pushing down slightly on the front of the keyboard tray until the tray is flat again. Then tighten the knob. Re-adjust the height of the keyboard tray as needed.
