Jo Ann Marsh, DC

 by Richard Thompson, MD
EK Health Services' Chief Medical Officer

Usually, this column is reserved for factual or educational information about issues regarding workers’ compensation, utilization review, poly-pharmacy, chronic pain, etc, based on issues and experiences that occur at EK Health.

Not this month.

This month, I must address the recent death of Jo Ann Marsh, our Executive Account Manager.

Dr. Marsh spent the last four years fighting a courageous battle against an aggressive cancer. She did this with courage, optimism, dignity, and determination - and also a complete lack of excuses and self-pity.  Despite the adverse side-effects that chemotherapy caused for her, she continued to come to work – with 100% effort – and live her life with nothing less than joy.  But in the last two months, she decided that chemotherapy had become a hindrance larger than her disease. She chose to discontinue treatment in favor of a better quality of life.  And on July 20, 2011, Dr. Jo Ann Marsh died quietly, serenely, at Kaiser Hospital.  Her end, mercifully, had come quickly.  Her suffering was minimal.

LEGAL-EASE: Find me a Doctor

 by Steve Kline, Esq.
EK Health Services' Legal Counsel

One of the 2004 SB 899 reforms was the introduction of the Medical Provider Networks (MPN) to the California workers' compensation system.  It was initiated partly as a solution to increasing medical costs within the system.

Initially some applicant attorney’s feared that it would it destroy their control of steering medical treatment to medical doctors with whom they had familiarity and support.  Using a primary treating physician who writes good permanent & stationary reports is almost as important as treatment itself.

Ergonomic Tip of the Month

Trackball, Touchpad, Vertical Mice, and Rollermouse

-by Kim Granata-Clark, MS in Human Factors and Ergonomics, Ergonomic Specialist

The trackball mice do not take a lot of space on the work surface or keyboard tray.  You can order a 2 or 4 button trackball.  There is not much stress on the hand with the trackballs but like most mice, when you are not using the trackball, take your hand off the mouse or rotate your hand onto the small finger off your wrist or carpal tunnel area.  The thumb is clicking the buttons and the fingers move the ball but try not to rest your whole palm on the trackball base when using the 2 button trackball.  Keep the natural C in your hand and allow movement in the arm.  When using the 4 button trackball, use your palm to move the ball and click the buttons with your fingers and thumb.  Also try customizing the left and right click mouse buttons to be on the top left and top right so you slide off the top of the ball to the buttons versus bottom left, which is the default for the left mouse click.  The 4 button trackball allows you to do more movement of the hand to use the ball and buttons but be careful of the wrist extension when you are not using the trackball. This trackball also allows you to customize a drag lock feature so you click one of the mouse buttons, highlight your text, and then click the button again without having to hold a button down while trying to highlight text with the trackball.
