Prescription Drug Abuse – Ways to Help Curb the Epidemic

 by Richard Thompson, MD
EK Health Services' Chief Medical Officer

On November 1, 2011 the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) published in an early release in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), their analysis of the epidemic use and abuse of prescription opioid pain relievers (OPR) in the United States.  This class of drugs includes Oxycontin®, Vicodin®, Lortab®, Norco®, Dilaudid®, and methadone among many others.

These drugs are impressively addictive and frequently diverted to friends, family or sold on the street. The CDC report reviewed the rates of fatal OPR overdoses, non-medical uses, sales, and related treatment admissions from 1999 - 2008. The MMWR is the sentinel reporting format for the CDC and is considered the gold standard for evaluation and recommendations for public health policy in the United States.

Clearly we often forget that simple things can bring some of the best moments.

So it is, with a recent WCAB Panel decision, Montalvo v Adir Restaurant, ADJ3545068.

On July 5, 2011 the Workers' Compensation Judge (WCJ) had issued a Notice of Intention to Dismiss Dr. Kevin Aminian’s lien. No objection was received and consequently, the WCJ issued an Order Dismissing Lien on August 1, 2011.

Laptop Devices Can Help Neck Fatigue

-by Kim Granata-Clark, MS in Human Factors and Ergonomics, Ergonomic Specialist

Do you travel with your laptop?  Do you carry external devices such as a laptop holder, keyboard or mouse?  At the very least, you should probably have an external mouse that fits in the palm of your hand, not the tiny mouse on the market for travel use.  Most likely you are using this mouse for a long period of time.
