Client Testimonial
“At our company, we all worked very closely with EK Health’s ergonomic team member. She would talk to all of us on a regular basis to make sure we were ergonomically healthy. I don’t think anyone who worked at our company wouldn’t know her. She is so passionate about her mission and does everything she could to make the workplace healthier and better. When any of us had issues, she would go out of the way to fix that and then follow up with us to confirm that the changes she made relieved the stress. Until it was done, she wouldn’t rest. She would always stress about staying healthy and tell us how a small change in the workplace, would make a huge difference. She would always talk to us and want us to contact her immediately if we came across any issues and we always did that. That made our lives so much better at our company. She is so committed to what she does and will be an asset to any institution.” -Research Scientist, a Bay Area Biotech Company

Dr. Marsh Bestowed the EK Health Award of Merit
by Richard Thompson, MD EK Health Services' Chief Medical Officer
We have just passed the holidays and I would like to deviate from the usual medical-legal-administrative nature of my articles.
On December 11, 2010, my colleague, Dr. JoAnn Marsh, was awarded EK Health’s first-ever “Award of Merit.” This award was presented to her in recognition of her unique dedication, integrity, inspiration, and good humor – just a few of her many qualities that surpass job description requirements. Her Award of Merit, while being the first, will be given on a periodic basis to deserving individuals at EK Health as recognized by their peers. It is the most prestigious award at EK Health Services, Inc.
Many of you work with Dr. Marsh and I am certain you recognize her ability to quickly comprehend an issue, contribute to the solution, and resolve it efficiently. She has never worried about the many hours she spends working, for she is always concerned about doing “the right thing” and obtaining positive results. She does not shy away from espousing risky, unpopular views that are heard and carefully considered by others. Her work at EK Health has truly been a labor of love.

LEGAL-EASE: Predictions for 2011
by Steve Kline, Esq. EK Health Services' Legal Counsel
Soothsayers beware. I am going to go out on a limb and trying to predict what will happen in the California workers' compensation world in 2011. The crystal ball has been removed from its red velvet box and is on the table. Please quiet yourself, this takes a lot of concentration. Well as you are probably aware, California will have a new Democratic Governor, Jerry Brown. (I know I am right, but this one doesn’t count as a prediction.) With Democratic majorities in both the Assembly and the Senate, what legislation will pass and what will the new Governor sign? First and foremost, there will be a new permanent disability schedule. However, unless the new DWC Administrative Director revises it first, the Legislature’s actions will not go into effect until 1/1/2012 as there are not enough votes to make it an urgency piece of legislation.

Ergonomic Tip of the Month
Mom thumb – DeQuervian’s Thumb
-by Kim Granata-Clark, MS in Human Factors and Ergonomics, Ergonomic Specialist
We all work in offices and can have our share of injuries. Many of you have families with young kids or infants that you pick up to hold before you start work and when you finish work. Some new moms and fathers are getting “new mom’s syndrome” or DeQuervian’s Thumb. This results from repeated hypertension of the thumb while picking up the baby or cradling the infant’s head, which pulls the tendons from the wrist to the thumb.
