Ergonomic Tip of the Month: Mom thumb – DeQuervian’s Thumb |

-by Kim Granata-Clark, MS in Human Factors and Ergonomics, Ergonomic Specialist
We all work in offices and can have our share of injuries. Many of you have families with young kids or infants that you pick up to hold before you start work and when you finish work. Some new moms and fathers are getting “new mom’s syndrome” or DeQuervian’s Thumb. This results from repeated hypertension of the thumb while picking up the baby or cradling the infant’s head, which pulls the tendons from the wrist to the thumb.
Some articles to refer to for solutions and recommendations to reduce the discomfort are at http://www.ehow.com/how_4844916_treat-new-moms-thumb.html or google/bing “mom thumb”.
